NAKED ROOFTOPS” The Inspiration behind the series

For the past seven years, Fernando has lived between Seville and Granada, drawing much of his inspiration from nights spent on the rooftops, observing the urban landscape and seeking reference points within a labyrinth of polyhedral shapes. While architectural forms serve as a foundation for his artistic exploration, the cityscapes of Seville and Granada present distinct perspectives. Seville’s landscape unfolds horizontally, just six meters above sea level, offering limited urban vistas from within its streets. Unlike Granada, where panoramic views are more accessible, one must venture to the Guadalquivir River to gain a broader perspective.

Naked Rooftops explores three distinct viewpoints—both within the paintings and in the unreal space they create. As visitors ascend the gallery’s staircase, they symbolically take their place on a rooftop, experiencing the artwork from varying distances and perspectives. Primary and secondary colors intersect through forms and directions, creating dynamic contrasts that shift between abstraction and figuration. This series is an exercise in chromatic relationships, blurring the boundaries between real and imagined landscapes. Here, color is the central visual element, weaving together shape, intensity, perception, and symbolism.

Executed in watercolor and ink on paper, Naked Rooftops is a series that began in the summer of 2019 and was completed in December 2024. This exhibition marks the first time the collection is being shown to the public.
